American Gigolo

Very early 80's (1980 in fact), and the style is there, big sunglasses, Armani suits, Moroder music and Gere is driving a black Mercedes SL (looks like a 450). It's a bit long, and the ending comes very flat and expected.

Claire's knee

I didn't think much of it, mostly because of the actors (not a big fan of J-C Brialy), the whole dialogue doesn't sound right, and the whole premise is a bit ridiculous.

The New World

Visually beautiful, thematically it's a mix of Pocahontas, Romeo and Juliette, and some kind of culture clash between good natives and filthy, stupid brits. Colin Farrel is quite good, but mumbles so his part does not really makes sense. Not much more than a nice looking picture from Malick.

La Collectionneuse

Almost a funky Rohmer, 1966 set in a big house near St-Tropez, with a few scenes shot in the famous resort. Patrick Bauchau is excellent and Haydee is the Scarlett Johanson of the time. The sory is slightly different from the other moral tales, but still about choice, freedom etc. Quite a sensual film, amazingly photographed by Nestor Almendros.

On dangerous ground

Quite a strange film, strating in the city and very noir following Robert Ryan and his cops colleagues around town, and Robert is prone to lose it with baddies, then moves in the snowy upstate New York to chill out and solve a murder case, and ends up meeting a blind Ida Lupino, so turning very white. Great score from Hermann, some of the cues will be used in a similar fashion in North by Northwest 16 years later.

My Night at Maud

Probably the more dense moral tale, with lenghty discussions about Pascal, catholicism, etc, so super intellectual and heavy, but at the same time brilliant and fascinating. Trintignant is awesome, and Fabian stunning in her bed in the lounge. It goes from cold to hot and so on, and through all the philosophy very passionate.

The bakery girl of Monceau/Suzanne's career

The first 2 films (short and medium length) from Rohmer's six moral tales. Bakery girl is sweet and charming and really excellent, Suzanne slightly less so.

Happy together

The Artificial Eye dvd is an abomination, looks as bad as a cheap HK disc, but for some reason the trailer included looks fantastic, very annoying! In any case not my favourite WKW, even though it is visually interesting (when properly shown), with good music and it's in Buenos Aires.

V for Vendetta

Gains in pyrotechnics and actions but lacks in emotion. I don't fully remember the graphic novel, but have found memories of it. The film is good but don't think it matches Alan Moore's vision.

Days of being wild

WKK's 2nd film, and first with Chris Doyle, a prototype for ITMFL and 2046, HK in the 60s, decors, music, time passing, loss and memories.

Exhibition

The famous documentary about a porn actress in the early 70s, whichattracted a few million people. At time a bit sordid but a very honest portrait. the sex scenes are a bit strnge, and lots of pubic hair. Midly interesting but not that good.

High Tech Soul

An interesting, if flawed, documentary on the creation of techno music with most of the Detroit key players, but mostly centered on Atkins, Saunderson and Atkins. could have been a bit longer and more in-depth but good to hear all these guys talk about their music and influences.

Ni d'Eve ni d'Adam

Civeyrac's fisrt feature film, set near St-Etienne in the middle of winter in a tower block area is a kind of griity 400 blows for the 90s, pretty bleak, nice moving music as usual.
