Ace in the hole
Despite being an almomost legendary Billy Wilder film, it didn't do much for me. Interesting about creating a whole media circus, already back then in the early 50s, I found Kirk Douglas annoying.
A blog mostly about the films I have just watched

Interesting atmosphere, set in bleak Glasgow, near some kind of gigantic bleak project. Quite mysterious and interestingly shot with all the CCTV footage from a control room, but then it goes al melodramatic.
Eric Blore almost steals the show again and is hilarious. Pretty standard story of mis-identities, and romance with singing and dancing, but slightly disappointing and overall less good than The Gay Divorcee.
I'm not a big fan of prison films, but Dassin makes a fairly good one here, thanks to Burt Lancaster and in particular Hume Cronyn as the tough warden. The flashbacks with a women are a bit crap.
Adapted from a play by Alan Ayckbourn, Resnais creates a strange non-theatrical atmosphere in the new area of Paris in the snow. I really don't like the actors, but the characters were touching with their failures, loneliness and quirks. The exchange of video tapes was well done. Not a masterpiece and disappointing based on the critics I have read, but pleasant enough.
Fun in the first half until the big cat chase, but getting pretty dull in the second half in the basement, and corny ending.
Very british, set in a public school, some scenes in black and white randomly but the outdoors colours are fantastic, thanks to Ondricek superb photgraphy, especially the greens. Cery charming if outdated, in particular the crazy revolutionary ending. Still, a good english film (!)
